Calling time on disrepectful comments

Ever been the subject of hostility in the YouTube comments section? Not to worry! YouTube is looking to expand its warnings on potentially offensive comments in an effort to reduce some of the bitterness within the platform. While on-platform comment warnings have existed for mobile users as far back 2020, YouTube is doubling down on protecting its users and creators by integrating this functionality into the desktop interface.

The alerts are able to detect statements that could be deemed offensive by others – allowing users to reconsider publishing their comments.

Currently, the new desktop alerts are available in English and Spanish. However, with YouTube’s focus towards encouraging respectful on-platform behaviour, expect them to launch the comment alerts across more languages in the near future.

10 minute TikTok videos have arrived

The winds of change are blowing over at TikTok. Back in 2016 they launched with max 15-second videos across the platform before increasing to one minute. Last July TikTok increased its video length from 1 minute to 3 minutes. Now, the creators on TikTok are going to have a lot more room to express their creative talents, with the app arguably making its biggest venture yet, preparing to take on rivals Facebook and Youtube.

Over the next few weeks, TikTok will be launching a 10-minute video option, which will likely see the rise of online Youtube & Facebook series along the same vein of popular Youtube series ‘’Super Wog” and “Charity Shop Sue” who generally clock in just under the 10-minute mark and have garnered viral followings.

Watch this space, as it is very likely that these forms of creative expression will be launched and homed within TikTok, something which has previously been the sole domain of their rivals.

Rounding up podcast lovers

With the rising popularity of podcasts in the past decade, Twitter has seemingly cashed in on the trend by introducing a dedicated tab for podcasts within its mobile apps. The tab will function as a discovery page for users allowing them to discover new podcasts while concurrently allowing podcasters to advertise their content.

Twitter first dipped its toes into live audio products in 2020 where they had launched Spacesan in app chat room where users are able to host public conversations for others to speak or simply listen in. The introduction of the podcast tab is likely an effort by Twitter to grow Spaces with speculations that the podcast tab will be incorporated into the chat room.

However, don’t get too excited… this feature is still in its early development phase and will likely launch late 2022.

Auto-generated captions arrive on Instagram

The wait is finally over for video creators on Instagram, unlike TikTok who has had auto-generated captions since last April, Instagram has finally joined the party. Allowing creators more time to spend on their content and less time writing captions.

Before this change, creators would have to manually add captions in themselves, a process that was quite time consuming. With their latest update these will now generate automatically, and Instagram creators can collectively sigh with relief.

With this latest change, Instagram becomes more accessible to users who have a hard time hearing or are Deaf. No doubt this latest shift will be a welcome change for anyone who wishes to watch Instagram videos without sound.
