Snapchat bets on AR future

Snapchat have announced a range of new features and updates including Lens voice search, a BYO machine learning model update to Lens Studio and Local Lens which will allow users to experience AR with their friends across entire city blocks.

Lens Studio offers Face Landmarks and Face Expressions for improved facial tracking, new Hand Gesture templates and an enhanced user interface to navigate easily within the tool.

These new updates are being well received by brands and developers as the promise of a platform built around AR becomes reality. If they get it right, they will successfully transition from an entertainment-only AR platform to one built around utility.

“Today, augmented reality is changing how we talk with our friends,” Snap co-founder and CTO Bobby Murphy said in a press briefing. “But in the future, we’ll use it to see the world in all-new ways.”

It’ll be interesting to see how users engage with this functionality; the company’s partnerships for visual search with Amazon and audio search with Shazam will definitely help adoption.

“Soon, Snapchatters and their friends can step into this virtual space together to decorate nearby buildings with colourful paint and experience a new dimension of AR,” a spokesperson for the company said.
