That got your attention.
There are a few interesting updates on the Google front, worth keeping an eye on, with their recent announcement to allow effectively FREE shopping ads.
Not available yet in Australia, but once rolled out it will make it even more important for those currently not selling online to take advantage and ensure they have the appropriate product feeds and e-commerce capabilities set up, particularly in the Google Merchant Centre.
Our CDO Trent McMillan stated, “I see this as a move from Google to further establish themselves as an integral e-commerce partner and counter the rise of Amazon, eBay and the likes by creating an open marketplace for retailers to showcase their products. By doing so, this ensures that all retailers are set up on Google Merchant Centre, which then opens up possible incremental revenue streams via shopping ads.”
There are distinct advantages to retailers, namely free exposure to millions of people who visit Google every day for their shopping needs. For shoppers, it means more products from more stores – discoverable through the Google Shopping tab.
Whilst we don’t have a launch date in Australia yet (US is live), this is one to watch. Retailers should get their Google Merchant house in order ready to benefit from the surge of shopper interest when this rolls out.
